High school outreach programmes

In 2011 BSTEP initiated student chapter initiative as part of its community outreach programme with the purpose of furthering excellence in Mathematics and Science among black youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. We thank our outreach partner Inqaba Biotec Industry (Pty) Ltd for their amazing support and funding. Inqaba Biotec Industry has previously funded our outreach programme with an amount of R45.000. Currently BSTEP has two outreach programs, namely the Saturday school tutoring services, as well as career motivation outreach for sciences

Saturday school tutorial services

Here the university students affiliated with BSTEP Student Chapter volunteer to provide tutorial lessons in Mathematics and Science during Saturdays and School holidays. Currently we have student chapter at University of Pretoria providing tutorial lessons at Gatang High School in Mamelodi, and student chapter at Tshwane University of Technology providing lessons at Bona Lesedi High School in Mahube Haveley, Mamelodi East.

Professional Networking Sessions

BSTEP organises the networking sessions regularly as a platform for SET professionals and students to come together to discuss critical SET related issues of public interest. Prominent speakers are invited to give the talk and share information

SET Landscape in South Africa

The discussion meant to inform the audience on the opportunity they can explore, the budget allocations and the skilled resources particular in reference to black professionals around the development and application of science and technology within a national system of innovations

Student Chapters Activities

Every year the student chapters plan and engaged on the following activities

Saturday tutorial lessons

Members of student chapters volunteer to provide tutorial lessons on Mathematics and Science within the black communities during Saturdays and school holidays.

Industrial excursion

The idea is to take students and learners on an industrial visit to inspire and educate them.

SET Seminars

An evening where student chapter invite Professionals from the Science, Engineering or/and Technology fields to come to network with students, share success stories and debate about current issues within the SET sector.

Open day

Student Chapter invites learners to the university open day to inform them of various career options available and requirements.

Business seminars

An evening where we invite Professionals from the SET fields, to talk of business options within SET

Support For Technology Based Entrepreneurship

BSTEP organizes sessions with the aim to support and encourage business start-ups in technology based entrepreneurship. 

Black Excellence Recognition through awards

BSTEP is planning to organise and hold the Black excellence awards. The event will take place at the CSIR ICC, Pretoria on the 30th November 2017. It’s our believe to look at black excellence through the developmental pipeline going all the way from basic education to professional practice.
